A Spike is any fastener, commonly nails or screws, used to fasten components together. In a set of construction documents, the architect will commonly refer to nails or screws as a Spike when he/she is not concerned with the type, penny, or other attribute of the fastener, and leaves the contractor to determine which fastener would be sufficient for the application.

Additionally, a spike can also be a heavy penny (around 60) which is used to mark survey points.
