2. any area between the [[convex]] side of a curve and a [[rectilinear]] bound outside it, typically tangentially to the curve. As a result, this area is commonly triangular in shape, and typically has one 90 degree angle.

Examples of spandrels include:
- the space between an [[arch]] and the bounding [[moulding]]
- the space between the [[arch arches]] in an [[arcade]] and the [[stringcourse]] or [[moulding]] above it
- the space between the central [[medallion]] and the rectangular corners of a carpet
