Skylights are windows which instead of being oriented vertically, rest on either a flat horizontal or an angle, typically determined by the roof pitch. Some skylights are designed to be set on an incline curb, which sets the skylight unit itself at a steeper pitch than the roof, allowing for increased drainage. All skylights need to have extensive flashing around it, which protects the rough opening from water infiltration. Many skylight units come with integral flashing as part of the unit, but often additional flashing is required.
