shim
any rough piece of material, commonly wood, that is simply cut to fit the construction conditions, and roughly shoved into place to help level assemblies (such as windows), or to help keep assemblies in place. shims can also be used as a nailing/screwing surface, or to keep two dissimilar materials apart.
