Insulation is any material or device whose purpose is to retard (slow down, reduce) the transmission of energy, most commonly in the form of heat or sound (in architecture, although insulation does refer to other forms of energy, such as electricity, in other contexts). Insulation can therefore be broken into categories:

Thermal Insulation- Retards heat transfer
Acoustic Insulation (Also referred to as "soundproofing")- Retards sound transmission
