Although the word "grade" technically refers to the pitch of the slope of the ground in topographical terms, the term "grade" is used by architects to refer to the level of the ground on the exterior of a building. For example, for a sillcock located 18" above grade, a line dropped parallel to the direction of gravity from the silcock would measure 18" when it intersects the ground.
