Italian roots, originated in the 6th century and chiefly constructed during the Middle Ages although modern campaniles do exist- it is a free standing, detached bell tower next to churches, cathedrals, or other public buildings.

Originally, the campanile had a circular plan, but evolved into a square plan in the early 8th century.
