Usually made of a strong metal pipe or a concrete post, a bollard is embedded into any bed of concrete to prevent, or selectively allow, the passage of vehicles into an area. Bollards can also have light fixtures integrated into them. Rising bollards are a fairly recent invention; the bollards can retract into the ground when full passage is required, and extended when security is needed.
