In masonry, absorption is the weight of water any masonry unit will absorb when immersed in water (either cold or boiling) for a specified length of time.

• For brick, it is expressed as a percentage of the weight of a dry unit.
• For CMU, it is expressed as pounds of water per cubic foot of concrete.
