Wood can have any number of deformities which will reduce it's Grade, some of which are:
- Knots- usually formed at the intersection of branches
- Shakes- any break in the wood where the grain is separated
- Checks- any break in the wood perpendicular to the grain
- Pitch Pockets- a pocket full of either hard or soft resin
