Welcome to the Sketchup Push/Pull tutorial. In Sketchup, there are no actual solid volumes, only faces and planes which bound those volumes, so when drawing in 3d, or using the Push/Pull command, keep in mind it is not defining a solid volume, rather creating those bounding faces. Activate the Push/Pull command by selecting the appropriate button on your toolbar, or press the shortcut P. You can Push/Pull freeform, snap to edges, or type in specific distances. You can also subdivide existing faces and only Push/Pull those portions. By Push/Pulling into an object and brining the depression completely to the other side, you can create holes through those objects. Also, you can Push/Pull nonlinear forms, such as circles.
