A stop order is a legally binding, formal, and written notification to a [[contractor]], [[subcontractor]], or other person authorized to perform construction on a building to immediately discontinue any and all work on a project. A stop order may be issued by the architect or owner for several reasons, including faulty construction, termination of contract, lack of funds, etc. A stop order may also be issued by the local government, or other authority; the stop order is then commonly called a Stop Construction Order, and is usually issued because of improper permits, violations to regulations such as [[SetBack set-backs]] or safety laws, or some other such aspect of the construction the government has authority to control. Violation of stop orders by [[contractors]], [[subcontractors]], or owners may result in heavy civil or criminal suits.
