Raft Foundation
a raft foundation (also known as a mat foundation) is a monolithic slab, very thick (often 4' to 6'), upon which foundation walls are placed. the entire system is caged with rebar, which protrudes above upon which the column grid is set. Often, to stiffen the slab, a grid of ribs is cast underneath it. Also, to reinforce a certain spot (in order to accept a point load, for example), the slab can be cast thicker; this is known as a haunch.
