any beam, commonly metal, where two [[flange flanges]] are connected by a [[web]].

I-Beams differ from [[WideFlangeSection wide flange sections]] (which are much more common in framed construction), in that metal I-Beams are formed via [[rolling]] or [[extrusion]], whereas [[WideFlangeSection wide flange sections]] are formed by [[welding]] metal plates together. As a result, I-Beams typically have [[taper tapered]] [[flange flanges]].

In modern construction, I-Beams are typically reserved for the [[GuideRail guide rail]] in an elevator shaft. [[WideFlangeSection Wide flange sections]] are the common metal [[beam beams]]/[[column columns]] seen by most people.
